Toy-Makers' House Museum Open for Tryon's 125th Birthday

Starts: Sep 4 11:00 AM
Ends: Sep 4 4:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, September 4 when The Toy-Makers' House Museum opens its doors in celebration of Tryon's 125th birthday!   We will be open at 11 am immediately after the Big Heritage parade downtown and we will stay open until 4 pm.  Come back the next day on Sunday for our official Grand Opening Reception.  This is an exciting event for many reasons, including the fact that the "Toy House" first opened it's doors to the public 85 years ago on September 5, 1925.

Both events at The Toy Makers' House Museum will have free toy making classes for children, food, drink, live music and who could forget the costume contests? Anyone or pet who visits the museum Saturday or Sunday dressed as either a Toy, Morris the Horse (Tryon's mascot who was originally made by the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers and is based off one of their most popular toys), or Eleanor Roosevelt (who gave her 4th of July address to Tryon from the "Toy House's" front terrace in 1934) will receive a contemporary wooden toy, a museum sticker and a certificate of participation.

Our museum will educate all to the memories, history, art and knowledge that were and still are the "toy house."  The museum's motto is Keeping Creativity Alive at the Toy Makers' House. Art, History and Imagination Will Always Reside Here.

Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers operated in Tryon from 1915 to 1940.  The company focused on two operations: the toy makers created small, painted wooden figurines based on classic nursery rhymes, while the carvers created mantles, furniture, church altars and other specialized wooden pieces.  The toys and wood carvings were created based on traditional European designs and were not typical Appalachian crafts of the time, but many of the region's well-known carvers began perfecting their craft while working with the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers.

At the Tryon Toy-Makers' House Museum you will find art exhibitions of original toys and furniture as well as the work of artists who were employed here.  A museum gift shop offers original handmade arts including hand carved wooden vessels, pottery, glass and of course handmade wooden toys from contemporary artists.  Our historical exhibitions explore the impact of the Toy-Makers' products on national and international markets.  Visit us and see the beauty and mastery in the works created here in days gone by.
